Israelis protest in Tel Aviv demanding Gaza ceasefire, hostage release
(MENAFN) Hundreds of Israelis gathered Tuesday night near the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv to protest the ongoing war in Gaza and to call for the release of hostages held by Hamas.
Protesters, including families of those still captive, blocked the Ayalon Highway by burning car tires, according to Israeli Channel 12. Demonstrators voiced their frustration with the government's decision to continue military operations in Gaza, demanding an immediate ceasefire and full hostage release.
The demonstration follows a breakdown in ceasefire and prisoner swap negotiations between Israel and Hamas. Talks in Doha collapsed last week due to disputes over critical issues such as Israel’s complete withdrawal from Gaza, a permanent ceasefire, prisoner releases, and humanitarian aid delivery.
Hamas has maintained its readiness to release all Israeli hostages in exchange for a lasting ceasefire, the full withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the liberation of Palestinian prisoners.
Critics, including opposition figures and hostage families, blame Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for obstructing a comprehensive agreement. They allege he favors limited deals that extend the conflict to preserve his political standing, fearing a collapse of his government if far-right allies withdraw over ending the war.
Israel believes around 50 of its citizens remain in Gaza, with about 20 thought to be alive. Meanwhile, over 10,800 Palestinians are detained by Israel, with rights groups accusing Israeli authorities of subjecting them to torture, starvation, and denial of medical care.
Despite international appeals, Israel continues its military campaign in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023. The assault has killed more than 61,000 Palestinians—nearly half of them women and children—and pushed the region to the brink of famine.
In response to the war, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November for Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
